Leadership and Legacy

Michael Fennelly

At Freshtoday, we are proud to work with ambassadors who embody resilience, leadership, and a passion for passing on knowledge to the next generation. Few people represent these qualities more than Michael Fennelly, the former Kilkenny hurling star whose career and continued contributions to sport make him an outstanding role model for schoolchildren today.

From Ballyhale, County Kilkenny, Michael enjoyed a glittering playing career with the Kilkenny senior hurling team, spanning 12 seasons. During that time, he collected eight All-Ireland medals, captained Kilkenny to victory in 2009, and earned recognition as both Hurler of the Year and a multiple All-Star award winner. His ability to perform in midfield, attack, and leadership roles made him one of the most respected players of his era.

What makes Michael’s journey even more remarkable is his resilience. Despite being diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic condition that could have ended his career, he pushed through adversity to continue playing at the highest level. His determination showed not only his strength as an athlete, but also his character as a person—an example that inspires far beyond the pitch.

Since retiring, Michael has continued to make a major impact on Irish sport. He has taken on roles as a coach, performance lead, and sport science lecturer, sharing his expertise with both elite athletes and students. By mentoring and educating others, he ensures that the lessons he learned throughout his career are passed on to the next generation.

As a Freshtoday Ambassador, Michael brings this same passion for teaching into schools. He helps us promote the importance of healthy living, nutrition, and physical activity, while also showing children that challenges can be overcome with perseverance and a positive mindset. His story demonstrates that success is built on commitment, balance, and the courage to keep going when things get tough.

At Freshtoday, we are delighted to partner with Michael in inspiring schoolchildren across Ireland. His legacy as both a champion and a mentor continues to influence the future of hurling—and now, through his ambassador role, he is helping to shape healthier, happier futures for young people everywhere.
